Keeping a UK LEI valid
An LEI has to be re-certified every twelve months. Renewal does not change the code. It confirms that the details held in the global LEI database still match Companies House, and moves the next renewal date forward. If the year passes without renewal, the record is marked LAPSED: the code still exists, but it shows anyone who looks it up that nobody has checked the data recently.
For UK firms a lapsed code is a practical problem rather than a legal breach. Brokers that screen client LEIs before execution may pause trading, and trade repositories check the status of the reporting counterparty under UK EMIR. Renewing before the date shown on your certificate avoids both. A multi-year plan covers the next renewals in one payment.
Renewal is also when to bring the record up to date after an event at Companies House, such as a change of name, a new registered office or a new parent company.
Before you renew, check
- The legal name and registered office match the current Companies House record
- The parent company information is still correct after any group restructuring
- Whether the company has been dissolved or is being struck off. A dissolved company cannot renew.
UK LEI renewal questions
When is my renewal due?
The next renewal date is printed on your LEI certificate and shown in the public GLEIF record. You can renew from about two months before that date without losing any time from the next period.
My LEI has already lapsed. Is it too late?
No. A lapsed LEI can be renewed at any time. Once the data has been checked again, the status returns to ISSUED and the code keeps working.
Our LEI was issued by another provider. Can we renew it here?
Yes, by transferring it to us first. Use the transfer page. The code stays the same and the renewal is included in the transfer.
Do we need to renew if the company is being wound up?
If the company is still trading or reporting during the liquidation, keep the LEI current. Once it is dissolved at Companies House, the LEI record is retired and no further renewals are needed.
